The Stirewalt makeover was an adventure. As we shot the first 12 hours of footage and the producer was about to call wrap when it was discovered that all of that footage had been LOST. Yes, lost. Needless to say, we ate some dinner and started reshooting, (ugh), which as you can imagine was tricky being that it is hard to go back and “re-shoot” the building, painting and laying floor when it has already been done!
I hope that the Stirewalt’s are enjoying their space because the final product ended up being completely different to the rest of their upstairs home. Their house had vaulted ceilings and exposed wooden beams whereas the basement resulted in a very contemporary and eclectic style. It definitely was a huge transformation but not necessarily what I would consider the Stirewalt’s aesthetic.
All in all, it’s hard to go wrong when you start with a blank canvas of sheetrock walls and end up with a completely furnished basement. It was also interesting to see the final episode with the ‘beauty shots’ because when we shot the final reveal the featured pool table had not arrived! Editing saves the day again.

They were so much fun to work with, they had great energy and excitement and were so appreciative of us being there, and lets be frank if any space needed a make over it was their kitchen. I think their relic appliances are now in a museum somewhere
Alexi was her usual smooth self but this was definitely the episode I started to feel more at ease and comfortable on camera. Jay Baker rocks!(episode Producer).

The Cudzilo’s master suite should have been called master sauna it was hotter than hell in their attic master bedroom. If you didn’t know already, when a scene in a show is being taped everything needs to be quiet. That means construction crew, airplanes, the neighbors dog, etc, oh, and AIR CONDITIONERS. You know -the things that make life comfortable when your laying a floor for example. Regarding the infamous area rug I have to go with the Cudzilo’s on this one and not America, it was not good! However, if I could say one thing it is that that bathroom with the large tile was absolutely spectacular as was the reconfiguration of the whole bedroom space. BUT, honestly the best thing about their makeover was their delicious baby girl -she was and is soooo cute. Jay Baker (episode producer) you rule!

Josh and Brooke’s Master bath makeover was far more work than what meets the eye on the show… one of the biggest elements that was not revealed was that the room the custom cabinet ended up in was originally a room for a bath, shower and toilet. This was all ripped out and the toilet was repositioned and the shower was moved into the main room with the double-sinks. Needless to say, the construction crew worked literally around the clock to the very last minutes to get this makeover completed. The ‘lighting’ reveal was also and adventure it was the end of the day, it was hot as hell, Alexi and I were at the end of our wits and the lights switches were NOT lined up with the actual light fixtures. We must have done that reveal six times. Thanks to good editing -it appeared to come off without a hitch. Matt Sprouse produced the episode and it was a ton of fun working with him. I hope the Trusley’s are enjoying their killer Master bath.

This past Saturday was Jill and Chris’s basement makeover. This was the very first episode that we shot (of 13). Here’s the backstory; 8 months ago HGTV hired me, over the phone after having seen me on a 3 minute pitch tape. No interview, no casting, no nothing. Next think I know I’m on a plane to Knoxville, TN to shoot the first episode of my first ever TV series. I’m meeting the producer and production company for the first time and an hour later their rolling tape on me. Holy shit! The Van Beke’s were the nicest people you could ever meet, and although it was the middle of February that we taped (and freezing cold) the experience was a ton of fun and really opened my eyes to how TV is actually ‘made’. I think that even though there were a lot of changes that happened after that episode (re; format, lighting, direction, etc.) to me, it was one of the strongest, most informative and best transformations (before and after) of the season.

Just wrapped up the final class of the Thursday July Upholstery Series at The Furniture Joint. For the most part the students struggled with their steps (even so I hope they all still had fun!) however I couldn’t help but be amazed at the incredible diversity within the class. One of the many reasons I love NYC. Shirley, Gloria and Jumee all deserve certificates, hehe.
